Do I have fixed working days?

You are available from Monday to Friday. Occasionally, an outpatient clinic may operate a Saturday morning shift. Work schedules are created together, with structure and regularity, so you know well in advance when you are expected to work.

What are the working hours?

Your shifts are variable: sometimes you start early, sometimes later. Working hours range between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., allowing us to support our patients and all consulting physicians effectively.

Do I need to work a minimum number of hours?

To ensure sufficient involvement in the role, contracts start from 24 hours per week.

What tasks are part of the role?

As a medical assistant in an outpatient clinic, your responsibilities include:
  • Blood collection via venipuncture
  • Collecting bodily samples (cultures, urine, sputum, feces)
  • Measuring vital signs (body temperature, respiration, height, weight)
  • Performing ECGs
  • Coordinating outpatient clinics (assigning patients to physicians at the appropriate times and performing additional actions when necessary)
  • Patient administration (scheduling/rescheduling appointments, call center duties including triage, front desk reception and check-out)
Some outpatient clinics also have additional tasks:
  • Wound care (removing and applying dressings)
  • Assisting with minor procedures (outpatient operating room)
  • Removing sutures

Can I shadow a medical assistant for a day?

Can I do an internship?

For internships, we collaborate with ROC Nijmegen.

Can I complete the medical assistant training at Radboudumc?

At Radboudumc, you can choose between two training pathways:
  • BOL (school-based learning with internships)
  • BBL (work-based learning program)

How can I obtain a BBL training position at Radboudumc?

You apply through a vacancy at an outpatient clinic. Sign up for a job alert to automatically receive a notification as soon as a training position becomes available.

How do you combine work and study?

You work 20–28 hours per week at an outpatient clinic and attend school one day per week at ROC Nijmegen.

Who pays for the training program?

Radboudumc covers the cost of your education. If you leave the program early without obtaining your diploma, you will be required to repay (part of) the costs.

How long does the program take?

The program lasts 2 years. During this period, you receive four consecutive contracts of six months each.

When does the program start?

The program starts twice a year: in February and in August.

Will I receive a contract and salary?

Yes, you will receive an employment contract for the duration of the program and a salary in accordance with UMC collective labor agreement scale 4. The school day is unpaid.

Can I do a job shadowing day?

Can I choose which department I start in?

Yes. You apply for the vacancy of the department offering a training position and choose what best suits you.

At some outpatient clinics, your role focuses mainly on welcoming and supporting patients and their loved ones. At other clinics, you will perform more medical procedures. As a medical assistant in an outpatient clinic, your tasks include:

What is the difference between a nurse (level 4) and a medical assistant?

A nurse (level 4) independently provides direct patient care and performs nursing technical procedures. A medical assistant supports the physician, organizes outpatient clinics, manages patient administration and triage, measures vital signs, and assists with basic medical procedures.  

What are the working hours?

You work between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.. Some days you start earlier, other days later, ensuring optimal support for all patients and clinic schedules.

Is there a job guarantee after completing the program?

No, there is no job guarantee. However, vacancies frequently become available, so there is a strong chance of finding employment soon after graduation.

Which diploma will I obtain?

You will complete the program with a recognized MBO diploma: Medical Assistant, level 4.
