That is why we focus on researching its implications and potential solutions — and we critically examine our own footprint. Did you know, for example, that our new main building is the most sustainable hospital building in Western Europe? We use thermal energy storage and have a green campus with space for nature. And in our plastic‑free restaurant, we primarily serve plant‑based and locally produced products. That really makes an impact in an organization with nearly 13,000 colleagues and around 180,000 patients each year!

To improve healthcare, we must first understand what causes disease. By studying the molecular mechanisms of diseases, we gain insight into why people become ill and where opportunities lie for developing new and better treatments. That is why we conduct biomedical research. We distinguish ourselves particularly through research in the areas of genetics, infectious diseases, kidney diseases, neuroscience (including Parkinson’s), and urological cancer. In this way, we turn knowledge into solutions that truly make a difference for patients.
